MSB newsletter 02/01/17

Welcome to the latest South Birmingham Momentum newsletter, full of exciting events for you to attend and ways to support the group fight the good fight.

This is the first newsletter of 2017 and things will get going straight away. There is a Labour day of action around rail fares tomorrow, MSB’s first meeting of 2017 on Sunday and plenty of other things to update you about.

The Labour Party meetings on the 6th January are particularly important. If you are a member of Edgbaston CLP please come to the policy forum with the two NEC members, and there is the Sion Simon event for the non-Edgbastonites. More information a bit further down.

Day of action on rail fares, 3rd January

Rail fares go up again on the 3rd January and Labour activists across the country will be leafletting stations to raise awareness and put the renationalization of our service back on the agenda. Bournville Labour Party will be leafletting their station (more details and to RSVP here). Hall Green CLP will be leafletting Hall Green (am) and Yardley Wood (pm) stations

Also, a number of trade unions, operating under the banner Action For Rail, are organising around the need for the railways to be brought back into public ownership and will be leafletting stations up and down the country. More details here.

Midland Mayor Labour Policy consultation events

It’s fair to say that there isn’t overwhelming enthusiasm for the West Midlands mayor on the left, what with it involving ignoring a democratic decision of the people of Birmingham not to have one just a few years ago, but with the campaigns beginning to kick off there will be opportunities to try and shape the Labour effort. Sion Simon, our candidate, is hosting a Birmingham consultation event on the 6th January at the Council House, beginning at 6:30. It’s a good opportunity for ordinary members to tell him what sort of policies they think he should be standing on. To RSVP click here. You’ll need to be a party member and make sure you bring your membership card. To see the other ones being held in the West Midlands (there are quite a few) click here.

Screening of I, Daniel Blake on the 7th January – and next MSB fundraising officer’s meeting

The Mac is showing I, Daniel Blake again in the New Year. It’s a must see and really shows the impact the Tory government is having on people’s lives. MSB members will be going along as a group. Meeting in the Mac at 5:30 for a 6pm start. To find out more click here. Tickets are running out so book now if you are definitely planning to go.

Our social/events co-ordinator Nicky Brennan has booked a table for a curry immediately after – if you fancy joining us for that please drop her a line nicky151289@gmail.com. She’s also got a fundraising meeting planned for next week so get in touch with her if you want to go along to that too!

**Next South Birmingham Momentum branch meeting – 8th Jan**

Our next South Birmingham branch meeting will be on Sunday the 8th January at 4pm at the normal venue: the Highbury Pub on Dads Lane in Stirchley.

As usual there will be lots to discuss and plan. All Momentum members and supporters in the Edgbaston, Hall Green, Northfield and Selly Oak constituencies are welcome. There’s only one exclusion and it’s the usual one – if you’re a member of a party other than Labour then you won’t be able to attend – sorry!

If you’ve never been to a political meeting before or you’re new to activism then please don’t feel intimidated about coming along. We’ve all been there and our meetings are friendly and welcoming to new people. You can say as much or as little as you want and there’ll be loads to get involved in regardless of what skills you have and what you are particularly interested in. Please join us – if you voted for Corbyn in 2016 and believe in his vision for the Labour Party and society you need to get involved to make it a reality. It won’t happen by itself unfortunately and we face some very powerful vested interests who are against it. Socialism is something that needs to be fought for by ordinary people.

Friends of the Library of Birmingham planning meeting:

5.30 pm, Mon 9th Jan

FOLOB’s next meeting will be on the 9th Jan – the main item will be the community libraries campaign. Do come. The venue is UNISON office,19th Floor, McLaren Building, 46 Priory Queensway, Birmingham B4 7LF.

Birmingham City Council budget consultation meetings, South Birmingham meeting on the 13th January

Sadly there are only two budget consultation meetings this year and they are only an hour long apiece. MSB will be going along to the one in South Birmingham on 13 January 2017, 2pm to 3pm: Stirchley Baths, 2-4 Bournville Lane, Stirchley B30 2JT. To check to see if there are spots and if so to book your place click here. We’ll be out in force and hopefully they’ll be interesting, albeit short, events.
